Getting Awesome!

I made one all encompassing supreme resolution of all resolutions this year. “Get Awesome!” That’s right, I spelled awesome with a capital “A.” That is because I am using it in this sense as more than an adjective, but rather as a proper noun used to describe a sentient entity, one that we all have to define for ourselves, but is very real just the same. It is much like God, but only without the “rule the world, supreme being, to be revered so much that you shouldn’t really talk about too much” undertones.

In order to cultivate “Awesome” in our life, we need to first define it. For me, Awesome(ness) is defined by the response it invokes. If something has the ability to get you psyched, to push away the “funk” of all the world’s demons and all of the innate suffering, then that, my friends, is Awesome. Some would say that life is suffering, and the way to happiness is to accept that and to detach from the transient things in life. Well, I would agree with that, some. I do believe that suffering is unavoidable, and that it is an intrinsic part of our life in this corporeal form on this material plane, however, I don’t think that the way to achieve inner peace is by passivity and acceptance of Suck. Once again, I use “Suck” as a proper noun to describe the antithesis to Awesome, you could look at Suck as the Devil. You could, but I don’t.

I believe that a level of contentment can be found with accepting Suck, but show me one person who can say, “Holy shit man, I just realized life sucks and I’m going to die, goddamn I feel enlightened and it rocks!!!!!!” And I’ll show you a crazy person or a liar, take your pick. That being said, I offer an alternative, accept that Suck is real and that it is going to come and go. Did you catch it? The secret? It will come and GO. That’s right, they missed half of the answer. Just as suffering is an intrinsic part of life, so is joy. “This too shall pass.” So, what will kick Suck to the curve, albeit temporarily?

This is where the slope gets slippery, and it will change for all people. Also, the depth of your Awesome will vary according to a wide range of factors, from your diligence, acceptance, tolerance, priorities, and a whole slew of others. There is no one formula that will fit for everyone, but there are some common paths that will take you part of the way. This is where I will lose some of you, but I propose the idea that glimpses of Awesome can be attained through some of the most superficial means, as long as you have the right attitude and intention. What do you guys think?
