Bowel Movement Bandit

I know that the title of this post may be a bit misleading. However, I must explain to you, I do not steal bowel movements. No, far from being a turd thief, I am referring to my recent propensity to steal the reading material out of the community bathroom of my work place. It seems that if you put a book shelf in a bathroom, people are going to stock it with their leftover magazines, and on rare occasions, books.

You may remember a recent post where I explained this whole phenomenon in more detail. Well, I have hit the jack pot over the course of the past week or so, and felt that I should share. I have now stolen three "The Economist" magazines, or would you call them journals? I'm not sure about that one. Also, I just now, in the past ten minutes, stole "The Life of Andrew Jackson" by Robert V. Remini. It is an abridgment of his previous volumes, but it should be a great read. I know that the Militant Archivist will be pleased.

Not as misleading as "turd burglar" would be.

Remini's devoted just about his whole career to spreading the gospel of Jackson. I'd say you're in for a treat. I'm happy for you. Hell, I'd even be pleased, if I could shake this friggin' cold.

Well I must crush your happiness for me. It seems that I had to give up this particular piece of booty. It seems that the person who left this particular book in the head, did not mean to, and somehow, intuition maybe, knew to ask my boss if any of "his guys" might have picked it up. So, being confronted with the choice to lie, and become a real thief, or give up my awesome new book, I returned it back to the original owner. Maybe I restored his hope in humanity. I h

Or confirmed his faith in self-interest. He's got to figure you'd have more to lose than gain by lying. Sorry you didn't get to keep the book. It's a fun read. I was just leafing through a few pages on google books and was happy to learn that Jackson was a big fan of James Monroe, which I did not remember. Having recently become one myself, it's nice to see that someone I like agrees.

Haha, isn't humanity and self interest the same thing? I think that self-interest may be the cornerstone of liberty. Hmm, maybe. I'll have to work on that one.

Two cornerstones: self-interest and independence of will. Basically, independence of will means that you've acted in your self-interest often enough to pile up enough money that you aren't dependent on anyone else. That way, no one can buy your loyalty - or your vote. It was the theory behind property qualifications for voting rights. Not sure how it's supposed to work for America if the gov't is buying me cars, paying off my debt, and covering my health insurance?? But anyway, the *idea* was, independence of will would keep Americans free. So, that's two cornerstones; must be a couple more. Firearms, maybe?

Ah, very good points my friend. You are absolutely right. So, yes, there must be a couple more, since to build something with corners, you usually need four of them. I do believe firearms would be one, yes, so what is the third?

Self-interest, independence of will, and an armed electorate all sound like a good start. For a fourth, I'm guessing maybe whats-it, the opposite of apathy? I made the small effort of googling for one, but all that came back was "interest," which is more or less covered already. I dunno, man. Any ideas? I'd like to say intolerance, meaning a level of bullshit that people refuse to stand for. Or would that be a breaking point?

I would call motivation the opposite of apathy, but that is a more narrowly defined version of independence of will. A willingness to be a "go-getter." Many have high hopes and dreams, but it takes motivation to actually go out and get what you want in life.

I agree wholeheartedly Sgt. Jarhead. In order to prosper from liberty, it does take motivation. Unlike Socialism, where motivation is rewarded by the redistribution of your wealth, and apathy is rewarded by receiving benefits you didn't earn. So, we need Self-interest, independence of will, motivation, and guns...or perhaps more to the point, the ability to protect the fruits of our labor from our fellow citizens and the tyranny that comes from an unchecked government.
